A Chair in the Rain

Outside the window a slow methodical rain fell. The rain was damp and cold and those who ventured out into its midst walked with hurried steps; their heads bowed against the wind and their hands shoved into their coat pockets.

Beyond the window, across the road, nestled among the greenery there sat a chair in the cold methodical rain. There was no awning covering it so as to invite weary travelers to rest. There were no other chairs around it so as to welcome cheery groups to gather in the greenery to sing and laugh. This chair sat by itself, a picture of loneliness, in the cold methodical rain.

Many walked by the chair sitting among the greenery. Some did not notice that it was there. Others barely glanced its way, for what use is a damp chair. One stopped and pondered its existence. Why was the chair there? Who would place the chair in the rain? But, he to left when no answers came to his ponderings. What use is a chair among the greenery in a cold methodical rain.

Someone put the chair there. One day a cold wet traveler too weary to continue on will see the chair among the greenery. Too wet to care about the dampness he will rest upon the cold damp chair. Others will walk by and wonder why there is a man on the chair. That chair will have served its purpose to give rest to those who happen by and tired from their long journey will rest for but a minute before continuing.
